Three Christians Killed in Mosul, Iraq
By Michael Ireland Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service BAGHDAD, IRAQ – Three Christians have been killed in the space of 24 hours in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported Wednesday. Quoting the news source, the Assyrian International News Agency www.aina.org , says a man and his father were both shot dead Tuesday, October 7, at their workplace, while extremists forced their way into a pharmacy in another district of the city and killed a Christian assistant who worked there. AINA said extremists killed a man and his father in September in the same city, which is located some 400 kilometers to the north of the capital and which is home to the second-largest community of Christians in Iraq after Baghdad. Son of Murdered Christian is also Killed
Compass Direct News reports: ISTANBUL – An unknown group of armed men killed a Syrian Catholic in violence-plagued Mosul, Iraq two weeks after his father was kidnapped and murdered. The gunmen killed Rayan Nafei Jamooa near his home on Sept. 10. Few details have emerged in the murder case, but sources said he and his father were targeted purely for their faith. Nassar Jamooa, the victim’s father, was kidnapped two weeks before his son’s murder; the elder man’s body was found four days later in the city’s western industrial area. A shrinking minority in Iraq, Christians are frequently kidnapped for a mix of financial and religious reasons, but Nassar Jamooa’s kidnappers did not ask for any ransom. Two Christians Kidnapped and Killed in Iraq
By Michael Ireland Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service MOSUL, IRAQ (ANS) — Despite the small signs of improvement coming out of Iraq, the Iraqi Christian community is once again in the sights of Islamic fundamentalists in the northern city of Mosul. AINA, the Assyrian International News Agency (www.aina.org ) today reports news of the death of a 65-year-old doctor, Tariq Qattan, kidnapped recently by a terrorist group. Quoting AsiaNews sources, AINA says that his family had paid a ransom of 20,000 U.S. dollars. But it was not enough money to free Tariq Qattan, one of the many Christians kidnapped by fundamentalists for extortion. Also in Mosul, two days ago — although the news has just been released today — another Christian, Nafi Haddad, was kidnapped and killed, AINA reported.
