‘Dark DNA’ Is the Latest Mystery in the World of Genetics… But What Is It?

Dark Matter is one of the biggest mysteries of astronomy today there's tons of evidence that it's there but try as we might we haven't been able to find it in biology there's a similar problem dark DNA when scientists were exploring the sequence genomes of certain birds and rodents they noticed something odd a sequence genome means everything is laid bare and yet certain DNA sequences were missing which was weird because these DNA sequences were very important they controlled the production of leptin in the birds or the secretion of insulin in the rodents genes that the scientists knew had to be there otherwise they'd have some mighty obese birds and dead rodents on their hands what's more the scientists studying the rodents found the products of the missing DNA sequences in their cells so they deduced that the genes weren't missing but were somehow hidden they dubbed these elusive sequences dark DNA sounds spooky but the reality is this dark DNA may be more of a blind spot in our DNA sequencing technology than anything else a closer look at the rodents genome found a heavily mutated section with abnormally high amounts of guanine and cytosine two of DNA's for base molecules called G and C for short it turns out gc-rich sequences are difficult to detect so the researchers missed this mutated pocket of DNA at first this dark DNA raises questions about how quickly mutations occur and what genes we may have missed when we sequenced other genomes like our own which is crazy to think that there could be more DNA in us than we realized especially when you consider that we only know what about one to two percent of the stuff we have found does those sections code proteins that have some function the other 98% ish doesn't make anything and so we don't know why it's there this vast amount of genetic code has also been referred to as DNA's dark matter apparently biologists love the dark matter analogy only the kind we're talking about now is the opposite of the first example instead of knowing what a gene does but not finding it we found a lot of genes but have no idea what they do slowly though we're chipping away at that riddle – it appears that a lot of this non-coding DNA is still helpful for regulating gene expression making sure that the right cells have the right hardware like hemoglobin in blood cell precursors and ion channels in neurons some of these sequences are almost identical across different species like humans mice and chickens considering we've been evolving separately from those species for up to 200 million years researchers concluded that these sequences must somehow be vital to our survival when researchers deleted four of these genes in mice they found abnormalities in the mices brains and wondered if mutations in these overlooked non-coding sections of DNA could be responsible for brain diseases like Alzheimer's so there's a lot of DNA to parse there and there could be even more we just haven't found because of limitations in our sequencing techniques our genomes are still a pretty dark and mysterious place and more research is needed one quick thing seeker needs your help please vote for us to win a People's Choice webby you're the people you get to choose you like us it works we made an awesome virtual reality doctor lets you experience what it's like to climb Mount Everest and it's a finalist in the VR category for the webby awards the seeker Everest VR Expedition mixes elements of interactive documentary with the immersion of virtual reality to bring you a first-person narrative from one of the most inaccessible places on earth we're super excited about receiving this honor and we would be even more excited if we won so please get out give us a vote and if we win we'll give you our viewers a very special surprise voting is open until Thursday April 19th you can click the link in the description to vote so what are you waiting for it's not like climbing Mount Everest just click that vote awesome oh and then check out the our Mount Everest super cool researchers believe that the Rodin's hot spots of DNA mutation could be evidence of an undiscovered and rapid mechanism of evolution there are known cases of rapid evolution and to learn more about ways species can shift in years instead of millennia check out traces video here that's it for now I'll see you next time on seeker

  1. So vaccines residue and byproducts can merge into this dark dna and go "dark" untill it triggers and merges with other cells…causing diseases?

  2. I like your channel becoz science is something wow u can ask about the dark which is surrounded in every way and this energy creator create many other things in itself

  3. I just think it's really fun how some people support GMO and yet every few years the genetic researches come out with a whole new epiphany about how what little they thought they knew about DNA is in fact even less

  4. I did my family tree on my heritage page.I wonder how Unique people we have in the family.I just want to make some project, how the faces changed after years.

  5. I think that a great deal of our genes are only active during formation. After we are adults only a tiny portion of our DNA remains active. And most of our DNA is in fact historical genes related to our ancestry that are no longer active. This means that our DNA could actually be much smaller but cells do not choose what can be discarded, it's more likely to keep cumulating new genes.

  6. I would be impressed if we could change a cold blooded animal to a warm blooded animal , normal mammals given the sight of a bird or a cat , the search between these dimensions could possibly be given to a blind person as the development gets better or even throgh A.i and camera systems, what can a Quantum computer say about connecting to the energy in a blood stream only in the eyes

  7. im not sure if i voted correctly, but i keep clicking the link but nothing happens, searching on that site 'seeker' isn't finding it

  8. There isn't 'tons os evidence' for dark matter. Just tons of evidence that current cosmological theories are flawed. Dark matter is literally a fudge factor.

  9. OUR DNA IS NOT DARK OR JUNK!!!! OUR DNA IS MAGNETIC AND MULTI DIMENSIONAL… OUR DNA IS QUANTUM AND MOST OF IT IS OUR AKASHIC RECORDS FROM OUR SOULS EVERY INCARNATION CYCLE. ONCE WE STOP POISONING OUR BODIES AND SET OUR MINDS INTENT ON OBTAINING A HIGHER VIBRATIONAL ENERGY FREQUENCY AND RAISE OUR DNA LEVEL THEN WE WILL KNOW THIS FACT AND SOON AFTER REALIZE THAT CONCIOUSNESS IS PHYSICS AND MAGNETISM IS MUCH BIGGER THAN WE HAVE YET TO ACKNOWLEDGE OR UNDERSTAND… MASS AND GRAVITY ARE MALLEABLE AND CAN BE MANIPULATED AND ALTERED USING VIBRATIONS AND FREQUENCIES ECT. ECT….. DILLY DILLY ♒⚕🕉☯️♾💙💚🧡🎨🍍🎶

  10. having been embarrassed to find that 'junk DNA' is not really thing the geneticists are changing their terms, thinking that we will not notice…just like 'global cooling' (1970s), 'global warming (so 80s-90s), and now it is 'climate change', like anyone has ever denied that climate changes…duh…

  11. Haha but yet scientists and other people still claim most of our dna is “junk” dna lmao we are so ignorant

  12. Is it hard to believe that maybe, just maybe, the millions of nucleotides between all the important genes in our DNA is just filler? Sure, occasionally (more like very likely) you'll have parts in that filler that actually code into a gene and can yield a protein.. But it's filler protein. A product of random association under chaos.. The actual important genes, the ones that code everything we live with, are spaced out and spliced together into such a manner where they never get left behind……… I do think that we can program the filler DNA space with secret genes that do special functions that we want it to do. Sounds super cool.

  13. Can you please at least try to understand the subject you warble so willingly about?
The amount of correct information in this video is essentially nil!
Down voted with extreme contempt! :/

  14. Bullshit lies and ignorant….they are data mining people for your ideas on the internet….Researchgate.com project breakthrough and SETI all looking for your shit….and lying

  15. Dark matter is antimatter it's just matter with oppasite charges and when scientists make antimatter it makes matter disappeare the more they make the more are reality disappears

  16. could you guys make a video of how exactly do scientists gene edit any embryo? I'm asking because of the recent news of a mad scientist that gene edit twin babies in china.
