How mindfulness can help you to live in the present | Rev. Takafumi Kawakami | TEDxKyoto

the secret to success and happiness? Hmm. But we all know what it is, don’t we? As great Zen masters teach, it’s staying connected with … our smartphone. (Laughter) But do these distractions
really make us effective or make us happier? Or in this case, maybe burned out. So today, together, right here, let’s take a step to a more mindful life. Mindfulness has been a part of Buddhist
traditions for many centuries. It’s a practice and a way of thinking that help us be present
with our experience in a nonjudgmental way. So, where are your thoughts right now? I hope your mind is here. However, most of the time,
our mind is somewhere else. It is somewhere in the past
or in the future. So we suffer more because we’re either stuck on something
that happened in the past or worry about something
that hasn’t happened yet. So if you are present, you are free from such suffering. But also, your action
at the present moment can create your past and determine your future. So that’s why being in the present
is very powerful. Also it’s important to keep
your objective point of view. Because the main source of suffering
is your subjective point of view. So we judge something to be good or bad. But we are just comparing it
with some ideal situation. So if you are nonjudgmental, or if you can keep
your objective point of view, you can reduce your suffering as well. The main practice
of mindfulness is meditation. Meditation is good for conditioning
you to be more mindful and nonjudgmental. So let’s try meditation right now. Sit up straight, and close your eyes, and inhale slowly for five seconds. And exhale slowly
for ten seconds or even longer. (Exhale) (Inhale) (Exhale) Try to feel how the air
is entering your body and exiting your body. (Exhale) (Inhale) (Exhale) Just feel your breathing. So how do you feel right now? Lately, this ancient
Buddhist practice is changing. Actually, personally I can see
the changes at my temple. I’ve started having more corporate
and business school groups in my meditation classes. In fact, various corporations like Google, LinkedIn,
Ford Motors and more, they are using meditation as a part
of their corporate wellness programs. Because neuroscience
has helped us to understand how meditation can influence our brain and emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence, or EQ
consists of six elements: “self-awareness,” “self-control,” “social awareness,” “social management,” “attention,” and “outlook.” Many studies have shown
that regular practice of meditation can increase the activity and mass
of the region of the brain associated with emotional intelligence. Especially, if you can improve
your self-control and attention, you won’t be disturbed, and you can pay undivided attention
to what you are doing at a certain moment. Also, relaxation is a key
to being more mindful. When you are relaxing, actually, a part or region of your brain associated with attention
and self-control, their activities increase. Actually, the oxygen consumption
of the brain gets low. You are relaxing. As you can see on this graph, when you sleep six hours,
you are really relaxing. But when you do 20 minutes of mediation, the oxygen consumption level
goes down to the same level as when you sleep six hours, so that means you are really relaxing. Also the carbon dioxide level of the brain increases if you do meditation
for more than 20 minutes. The increase of the carbon dioxide level
in your brain stimulates your brain stem. And you brain starts releasing serotonin. The serotonin is the neurotransmitter
that further relaxes us so you have a better
self-control skill and attention. That’s why meditation is an effective way
to be more mindful. So now, you are ready to be more mindful. Regular practice of meditation
can relax you more and improve your attention
and self-control. So that you can experience
each moment of your life fully and mindfully. As Buddhist teachings tell us, everything is impermanent. Time keeps moving forward,
not backward. So let’s not miss any precious
moments with our beloved ones. Actually, this is my daughter. When this picture was taken,
she was two years old. Now she is three and a half.
She is quite a handful. But she always makes me aware
how powerful it is to be present … in that moment. Your past and your future depend
on the present moment. And that moment is now. (Applause)

  1. Almost everyone in this generation will know the mind truth (about living in the present, how our mind is in the way, etc.). What people do after they know will seal their fate. Google truth contest and read "The Present" to learn how to live in the present. The first page alone can turn this world right side up.

All the things that happened in the past, you remember or relive them NOW, all the things you plan, fear or dream of for the futur, you experience it NOW. And if that certain event in the futur is finally there, it is also NOW, so you better make your NOW worth living.

  3. The statement about CO2 and brain activity during sleep and meditation confuses us…We understand CO2 is what climate change is increasing on the planet and this is not good…Talk is contradictory…

  4. What we humans need is more energy and a higher grade of stresstolerance. If we could do everything more effortlessly many things would be fine.

Both in their teachings and up to date Scientific Research shared with us there have overwhelmingly gained top knowledge and creative exercises: that off Gentle Yoga, Chair Yoga, Educational classes on such top subjects dealing with Stress, Anxiety, Meditation, Healthy Breathing, Nutritional Foods, Laughter, Journaling, Retreats, and I could go on and on.

  11. I have a doubt he said when we sleep CO2 level in our brain increases and oxygen level decreases, I think opposite things should happen in brain. if anyone can clarify this.

  12. Yes people, learn more meditation to be more productive, to earn more money. The monks from today also think a lot about money, money, money. Sad truth.

  13. When i started mindful meditation, it didn't work at first but i still kept doing it and now my self-esteem, confident and everything is increasing. Guys who are going through depression, anxiety and any other mental problems, i suggest you to do a mindful meditation just 10 minutes a day. It will change your life!!!

  16. We can become enlightend, rich, or even killed at any moment. To enjoy life we have to appreciated it giving us all the options. Life is greatfull enough to give us the freedom of our death. To be onest death is such a natural process it's not that big of a deal. We condition ourselfs to such but we where dead longer than we are alive so… Why would it not be a home welcoming process. Live happy die happy!! Fearless happiness.

  18. As I told a friend recently; Once a day has happened it will NEVER come back. And the future hasn't happened yet. Neither yesterday nor tomorrow exists in this moment. Tomorrow is only an expectation and a scenario thought in our heads and sometimes the scenario we paint in our heads frighten us so much that we feel like we have to prepare, then we feel underequipped and get anxiety. And when we dwell on a past event (I have PTSD so trust me I know) then we also keep ourselves in a scenario of pain and suffering.
    Stop living life in the space of anticipatory pain.

  20. This monk offer a distorted version of Buddhism and Zen expecially. This is very dangerous. He still feels attachment to empty concepts like "efficient", "happy", "time" itself. Once your mind is completely free through understanding of impermanence and meditation, these words lose importance and meaning, for they're empty. Seeking happyness is still attachment, to a thought… If you seek, you're already projecting yourself in another moment which is not the present moment. He says time only moves forward ? How can that be when only Present is real and vivid and happening ? There's no forward if there's no backward. Only Present exist.

  25. What a poor teaching. Just common places. Life is not only breathing. Then better stay in a Koma. The body goes on breathing and the mind does not think about the future or the past. Just staying in the present moment makes you dull. Even a frog can do it. What he is saying is not the whole thing. He does not say anything about being mindful during daily activities. We can not sit the whole day in meditation. The second half of the stuff he is saying is just abstract blabla and sounds like a commercial for his meditation course.

  28. How can you relax and be calm in your present moment when your present moment is a bad problematic situation? I would think you would want to get away from your "Now" instead of focusing on it.

    A simple example is 12 hours ago I went to a Mindfulness talk and guess what happened when I open the YouTube app?

    Mindfulness videos pop-up immediately upon opening the YouTube app.

    Because on one hand it makes life much less serious and it helps you focus on your goals.
    But on the other hand it leads to rejecting compassion and putting your wants above the need of others and you become selfish and manipulative.

  33. I trust this video bcz I have been meditating for 13 yrs ..many things I achieved with self controlling, i.e., energy from meditation.

    I have been getting rid of tensions/pressure situations by meditating for mini 10 mnts a day.
