Korea’s opposition parties meet to discuss ongoing political scandal

The leaders of the main and minor opposition
parties met this morning to discuss ways to resolve the scandal… that has crippled state
affairs. The meeting comes as President Park indicated
that she would hand control of the Cabinet to a prime minister recommended by the National
Assembly yesterday. For more, we connect to our Ji Myung-kil. What can you tell us about the outcome of
the meeting, Myung-kil? Mark. They are expected to try and unify their stance
on President Park Geun-hye’s proposal that they choose a candidate for prime minister. The opposition heads agreed that the only
way to deal with the fallout from the scandal gripping the nation is for President Park
to relinquish control over affairs of state… and hand full authority to the new prime minister,…
effectively signaling her resignation. They slammed the president for not fully clarifying
the scope of authority she would give to the new prime minister. They also said she was trying to evade responsibility
with some stopgap measures and urged the president to give up her ruling party membership. Meanwhile, concerns about a split in the ruling
Saenuri Party have continued to intensify,… as a factional conflict over how to handle
the political scandal involving President Park’s confidante spirals further. Lawmakers from the non-pro-Park faction are
pushing for a separate leadership within the party to purge the pro-Park wing. Mark.
