Ongoing Bus Delays: Who’s to Blame?

NEW SCHOOL YEAR — FOR MANY O-P-S FAMILIES… AND OF THOSE THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO RIDE THE BUS — WELL — MANY OF THEM — ARE FINDING THEIR OWN WAY TO SCHOOL. SO WHO’S TO BLAME AND IS THERE A FIX? JESSICA GILL TAKES A LOOK. ANOTHER MORNING — ANOTHER NO SHOW. BUT THE CLARKS — DUSTIN AND KELLY — HAVE FOUND ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTA TION FOR THEIR DAUGHTER KAYLEIGH… DUSTIN CLARK, PARENT: “HAVE A GOOD DAY AT SCHOOL OK? LOVE YA!” AFTER HER BUS FAILED TO PICK HER UP FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, ON WEDNESDAY. OMAHA PUBLIC SCHOOLS — RELEASING YET ANOTHER STATEMENT — SAYING THEY’RE WORKING WITH THEIR CONTRACTOR — STUDENT TRANSPORTA TION OF AMERICA TO ASSES THE IMPACT OF TRANSPORTA TION ISSUES. IT SAYS QUOTE: “S-T-A IS CURRENTLY EXPLORING ALTERNATIVES FOR MANAGING BUS DRIVER SHORTAGES.” BUT THE REAL PROBLEM — ACCORDING TO SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER ACCORDING TO SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER “MARQUE SNOW” — IS NOT NECESSARILY THE CONTRACTOR AND THEIR SHORTAGES — IT’S THE FACT THAT O-P-S ADDED 19 NEW BUS ROUTES… MARQUE SNOW, OPS BOARD MEMBER: “THIS WOULD PROBABLY BE THE LARGEST SCHEME OF BUS ROUTES THAT OPS HAS EVER HAD.” SO LAST MINUTE. MARQUE SNOW, OPS BOARD MEMBER: “IT’S INEXCUSABLE.” EVEN ON THE WOWT 6 NEWS FACEBOOK PAGE — A DRIVER FOR O-P-S COMMENTED: “I HAD ALL KINDS OF CHANGES TO MY ROUTES BETWEEN THE PRACTICE RUN AND TODAY.” — TODAY, OF COURSE BEING — WEDNESDAY… SHE GOES ON TO SAY: “NON SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT’S LIKE.” MARQUE SNOW, OPS BOARD MEMBER: “THE BLAME ULTIMATELY LIES WITH THE BODY, AND THAT BODY IS OMAHA PUBLIC SCHOOLS.” HE SAYS POOR PLANNING AND LACK OF COMMUNICATION — ARE BIG REASONS THERE ARE SO MANY FRUSTRATIONS, RIGHT NOW. MANY OF THE PARENTS WE SPOKE TO… AGREE. DUSTIN CLARK: “LET US KNOW AHEAD OF TIME, ‘HEY, WE DON’T HAVE A BUS FOR YOUR ROUTE. DON’T MAKE US THINK THERE IS A BUS FOR OUR ROUTE AND THEN KIDS ARE LEFT STANDING OUT HERE ALL DAY.” INTERESTING SIDE-NOTE, HERE, JOHN AND MALORIE — THE TOTAL BUDGET FOR O- P-S TRANSPORTA TION — IS 36 MILLION TAXPAYER DOLLARS. ACCORDING TO SNOW — THAT’S MORE THAN MOST LARGER- SIZED CITIES. HE THINKS THE DISTRICT COULD SAVE MONEY AND SOLVE A LOT OF THESE TRANSPORTA TION ISSUES BY MOVING TO A “TIERED BUS SCHEDULE.” THAT’S WHERE BUSSES WOULD MAKE SEVERAL STOPS AT VARIOUS BUS STOPS — PICKING UP WAVES OF KIDS ONE TRIP AT A TIME — THE CATCH WITH THAT, THOUGH — IS THAT IT WOULD REQUIRE DIFFERENT START TIMES… AT DIFFERENT SCHOOLS. BUT HE SAYS — IT’S… DEFINITELY SOMETHING — WORTH LOOKING INTO. QUESTION ANSWER THANK YOU!
