Let’s start with the national news:
Gujarat has become the first state in our country for establishing the cashless system
in its public distribution system (PDS) of food grains. With the two pilot projects on utilizing the
head post offices as Passport Seva Kendra being a success, the government is now planning
to scale up this programme by opening 56 such facilities across the country. The Union Cabinet has approved ‘Pradhan Mantri
Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan’ (PMGDISHA) to make 6 crore rural households digitally
literate. The Supreme Court has approved the government‘s
plan to record the identification details of mobile subscribers through an e-KYC (Know
Your Customer) mechanism linked to Aadhaar card. This step has been taken in an attempt to
improve National security. The Reserve Bank of India announced that there
will not be a cash withdrawal limit for savings account from March 13 2017. A moderately intense earthquake that measured
5.8 on the Richter scale hit Uttarakhand on the 06th of February 2017. Tremors were also felt in Delhi and other
parts of northern India. Vistors visiting the mughal gardens will witness
roses named after the Indian President and his wife, growing next to ‘ Abraham Lincoln’,
‘Christian Dior’ and ‘Queen Elizabeth’ . ‘President Pranab’, a crossbred variety
of rose was planted last month along with another variety of rose named ‘Suvra Mukherjee’. INTERNATIONAL NEWS:
The world’s longest commercial flight landed in New Zealand on the 6 February 2017 with
the arrival of Qatar Airways’s Doha-Auckland service. In an effort to strengthen the bilateral relations
between India and UAE, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pavak made a goodwill
visit at the Mina Al Rashid (Dubai Port) from February 4 to 7, 2017. India and the United States have agreed to
maintain the on-going momentum on key bilateral defense efforts. US Defense Secretary James Mattis telephoned
Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar and expressed commitment to building upon the tremendous
progress made in bilateral defense cooperation. The US senate voted to confirm Republican
Senator Jeff Sessions as the next Attorney General of the United States. India and Austria signed a protocol to amend
the existing bilateral taxation treaty for Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention
of Fiscal Evasion. BANKING NEWS:
Federal Bank has partnered with leading online data and information portal Commodity Online
for the distribution of loans against warehouse receipts and collateral management services
across the country. Bank of Baroda (BOB) has tied up with IFFCO,
a cooperative, to provide co-branded debit cards with inbuilt overdraft facilities to
the farmers, in an attempt to push digitalization. ICICI Securities, a subsidiary of ICICI Bank,
has entered into a strategic partnership with Saxo Bank, an online multi-asset trading and
investment specialist. Private sector lenders HDFC Bank and Kotak
Mahindra Bank are live with the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) that is aimed at easing
utility and other repetitive bill payments for consumers. Private sector lender IDFC Bank together with
fintech startup IndiaLends is said to enable first-time borrowers who do not have a credit
history to take loans. BUSINESS NEWS:
American startup Planet Labs, that launches small satellites into orbit and sells the
imagery, has announced its acquisition of Google’s ‘Terra Bella’ satellite business. A mobile app developed by Alibaba helped Chinese
authorities recover 611 missing children last year. The ‘Tuanyuan’ app, meaning reunion in Chinese,
sends push notifications with photos and descriptions to users who are close to the location of
a child’s disappearance. Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, BCAS has
suspended the license of budget carrier IndiGo’s aviation security training facility. With the government taking steps to improve
ease of doing business and relax regulations, foreign direct investment into the country
surged by 60% to USD 4.68 billion in November 2016. SPORTS NEWS:
India to host FIBA Women’s Asia Cup basketball tournament at Bengaluru in July, 2017. Sourabh Verma bagged the Men’s Singles title
defeating Lakshya Sen in the 81st Senior National Badminton Championships tournament that was
played in Patna. The official mascot of the FIFA Under-17 World
Cup India 2017 – ‘Kheleao’ was unveiled at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi
on 10th February 2017. Virat Kohli recorded his sixth Test 150 against
Bangladesh at Hyderabad on 10th February 2017. He set the record for most 150-plus scores
by an Indian captain in Tests.
