Youth Voices — Balancing the budget / L’opinion des jeunes — Équilibre budgétaire

Hi there, my name is Kris, I’m the Executive
Director for Generation Screwed. And I’m Daniel, I’m the Eastern Coordinator
for Ontario. Generation Screwed, or GS, is the youth arm
of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. In that regard, we are the largest non-partisan
student network fighting against debt, deficits, and government waste across the country. We are active in over 30 universities and
colleges and together we’re fighting back. And today we’re here to share two priorities
that we have for the federal government when it comes to the budget. First, we’re asking the federal government
to return to the promise they made to us in 2015, and that is to have a balanced budget
by 2019. A balanced budget is a way that the government
shows that their spending is reasonable and that they’re having their expenditures back
on track. A recent poll indicated that this is a number
one issue for a majority of Canadians across this great country. And the second is for the federal government
to pay down its debt. Our federal debt is at $667 billion, that’s
at its record highs. It grows about $2,870 every five seconds. That’s more than what the average millennial
makes every two weeks. Having this much debt puts us in a bad place
when an economic downturn like the one in 2009 happens again. And it’s for this reason that we’re fighting
back because the interest payment alone is $26 billion.
